She was the daughter of James W. and Pauline Nesmith. She died at home in College Hill from diptheria when she was 9 years old. The house that she lived in at 1502 Astor Place belonged to her aunt's abolitionist family and was a station on the Underground Railroad. The activities at her home ceased a year before she was born shortly after the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
