Member of Texas State Legislature, 1853; delegate to Texas secession convention, 1861; colonel in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; Representative from Texas in the Confederate Congress, 1864-65. General John Magruder impressed by his gallantry recommended he be promoted to brigadier general, however his highest Confederate rank was colonel.
