Robert was the son of Raymond L Center and Alice J. Center of Inglewood and he enlisted in the US Navy on May 10, 1966 in Los Angeles California. CMGSN Center received orders for duty in Vietnam where he was assigned to and served with PBR-58 (River Patrol Boat), River Division 51, Task Force 116, USNAVFORV.

On July 7, during a patrol north of Can Tho in Phong Dinh Province a claymore mine 20 feet above the river bank hidden in a tree was detonated by the enemy as two patrol boats moved along the river. The explosion killed four sailors and two others were wounded. CMSN Center was one of the casualties, he was killed by massive fragmentation wounds by the hostile explosive device.
