Johanna was baptized on March 14, 1875 and when she reached her 14 years of age in the year 1889, Johanna received the sacrament of confirmation at the Schwerin Dom, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany.

In 1890, she was counted, aged about 15 years, single, lutheran by religion, in a census for the same location as above, shown as daughter to the head of family.

At about 21 years of age she emigrated to United States in the year 1895.

On June 6, 1900, at the borough of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York State, United States, Johanna got married, aged 25, single, with Christoph Ludwig Bruns, son of John Bernhard Bruns and Martha Barmsen, aged 50, widowed and German as well.

Their son was: Christopher 'Hans' Louis, born in the year 1900.
Her siblings were: Minna Caroline Auguste and Margarete Dorothea Elisabeth Strauss

On September 15, 1904, we find her, aged 29, in the New York Passenger Lists, sailing back from Cuxhaven, Germany to New York, United States, on the ship Patricia, with her husband (54), working on his own and son, Hans (4) United States-born. Both Johanna and Cristoph are shown as United States citizens having their last residence as well as their final destination in New York.

Again, on September 24, 1908, this family sails back on the Blücher, from Hamburg to Southampton, Cherbourg, New York, stating they have their residence in New York. Thay are listed as follows: Cristoph (59) married, private position, Johanna (37), married and Hans (7)

In 1910 Johanna is counted aged 35, married, in a census for Stapleton, Ward 2, Richmond County, New York State, residing at 55 Smith Terrace, with her husband, Christoph (60), living on his own funds, and their son Hans (9)

In 1915 Johanna, aged 40, housewife, is enumerated in a census for same location as above, living at 134 Wright street, with her husband (65), no occupation, and their son (14), attending school. The three of them were citizen.

Finally, on January 6, 1920, she is counted aged 45, widowed and naturalized, in a census for the first Assembly District, Richmond Borough, New York State, living at 174 Wright street, with her mother, Pauline 'Minna' Strauss, born Hofmann (68), widowed.

She dies aged 45. There is a probate record for her, dated May 19, 1920 and issued at Richmond, New York, United States.
