Robert was born in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. He was the 4th of 6 children of the widower William Flaherty (born in Ireland and went to Canada in 1806) and his 2nd wife Charlotte Price (born in St. George, New Brunswick, Canada between 1812-1817).

Robert was 12 when his father died. Within 3 years, his mother married the widower Samuel Patterson. Altho not known to be legally adopted, Robert used his stepfather's surname when as a Canadian citizen he joined the Union Forces during the American Civil War. He returned to Canada after.

His 1st and her 1st marriage was with Ellen "Nellie" M. Reardon McGrath of Newfoundland, Canada on 9 Jun. 1870 in St. John, Newfoundland, Canada. They had no children, and later divorced.

He immigrated to the USA from Canada in 1880 and was naturalized in June 1887.

His 2nd and her 1st marriage was with Cordelia Evelyn Larson of Andover, Henry County, Illinois on 18 Aug. 1888 in Chicago, IL.
They had 7 children :
