FRED A MARTIN DIES, ROLLER SKATING LEADER

Fred A Martin 67, who sparked the growth in popularity of roller skating in the United States, died yesterday in Detroit Memorial Hospital. He suffered a heart attack two weeks ago.

Mr Martin, a record holding roller skater in both sprints and marathon events operated the Arena Gardens in Detroit from 1935 until the building was torn down in 1953 to make way for the Edsel Ford Expressway.

FOUNDED ASSOCIATION
Since then Mr Martin had been living in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

He was one of the 17 founders in 1937 of the Roller Skating Rink Operators Association, now the largest group of roller skaters in the world. He was its secretary until 1952 when he became its president for one year. Since then he had served the association as promotional counsel.

His world record of 304 miles for the 24 hour endurance skating event, set in 1915, still stands.

SERVICES SUNDAY
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Nettie, two sons, Roland and Robert, three daughters, Mrs. Clarice Gerych, Mrs. Marjorie McLauchlen and Mrs. Rose Blavatt, and 17 grand-children.

Services will be held at 3 pm Sunday in the Ted Sullivan Funeral Home 14230 McNichols west, with burial Monday in Oak Woods Cemetery, Chicago.
