Author and editor. Associated with Ebenezer Howard, and Finance Director of the Garden City movement, he edited three magazines ("Everyman", "New Britain", and "Theatregoer") and wrote twenty-one books, many of which were about Garden Cities and most of the remainder about Shakespeare and the theatre, notably a biography of Harley Granville Barker (1955) and "A Guide to the Plays of Bernard Shaw" (1963). Also known as the author of "The Perfect Master" (1937), which was the first biography of Meher Baba. Purdom is himself the subject of a biography, "Divine Drama", by Bob Mossman.
