US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from the 3rd District of Michigan from December 7, 1993 to January 3, 2011. He attended both Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and the University of California, Berkeley where he earned both a A.B. Degree (physics) and a Ph.D. in nuclear physics. He later taught and did research work at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley from 1960 to 1966. In 1966 he went back to teach physics at Calvin College and remained in this position for the next sixteen years. From 1975 to 1983, he served as a Kent County (Michigan) commissioner. He would go on to serve in both the Michigan State House of Representatives and State Senate from 1983 to 1993 before being elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives in a special election to fill the seat vacated by the death of Representative Paul B. Henry. He would go on to serve in this position for eight terms before stepping down in 2011. During his tenure in the House, he served as the Chairman of the House Administration Committee for one term. He was considered a "moderate" during his House tenure. He passed away after being in declining health for over a year.
