Dr. George J. Bernays was the son of Clemens Bernays and grandson of Jacob Bernays, of Germany. Her mother, Minna, was the daughter of Frederick Doering, of Germany, and grand-daughter of Seris Bertrand, of France. George J. Bernays was also a distant cousin of Sigmund Freud, whose mother and wife were both Bernays, and of Albert James Bernays, English chemist. Other relatives were Louis C. Spiering, an architect and architecture professor based in St. Louis who worked on building designs for the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904 (Spiering was the grand-nephew of Karl Ludwig Bernays) and Edward Bernays, Austrian-American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations".
