March 2007 – Passage. After having lived a full, wonderful life, one of the world’s great mothers, Jeanne Cannon Pugsley, passed away March 3, 2007 in Salt Lake City. She was born November 20, 1917 in Salt Lake City to Lewis Telle and Martha Howell Cannon. She was a granddaughter of George Q. and Martha Telle Cannon and Joseph and Mary Maughan Howell. Throughout her life Mother was very family-oriented and deeply interested in the families from which she came, the Howells and Cannons. Many of her closest friends were her siblings and cousins. She valued her roots and the importance of a strong, nurturing family.
On October 7, 1939 Mother married our father, Harry D. Pugsley, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Our parents had a happy marriage and a productive, marvelous life together. During the years that our father's health was declining, Mother lovingly and patiently cared for him. He died April 17, 1996.
Mother is survived by three of her four children. One son, Dr. George C. Pugsley (Pat) of Mercer Island, Washington, preceded her in death November 13, 2006. Her surviving children are Susan P. Andrews (Scott) of Draper, and Scott C. and Philip C. Pugsley (Margaret) of Salt Lake City. She is also survived by her sister, Louise Cannon Hunter, of Walnut Creek, California.
Mother was a kind parent and provided a secure, happy environment for her growing children. She continued to be interested and supportive as the children matured, received their education, became established in careers, and had their own families.
Her children, 16 grandchildren, and 28 great-grand-children will miss their visits with her and her wonderful hospitality. Mother was very active in a number of civic, church, and social groups.
She served as a volunteer member and officer of the Utah Symphony Guild, LDS Hospital Auxiliary (and was a past-president of the organization), the Salt Lake Junior League, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, the Primary, the Classics Club, the Friendship Circle, and a stimulating neighborhood study group. She enjoyed playing bridge in several groups.
She graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Home Economics and later served on its Emeritus Alumni Board. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.
A small, private graveside service will be held in her honor by her family. The family expresses sincere appreciation to the members of the staffs of the Parklane Manor and Brighton Gardens assisted living facilities for their remarkably kind care of Mother during the last years of her life. In lieu of flowers she suggested that contributions be made by friends to the Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
