The wife of noted evangelist and abolitionist John Newton, the former slaveship captain-turned-Anglican clergyman who authored the hymn "Amazing Grace", Mrs. Newton died at age 61. Born Mary Catlett c.1729, she had been her husband's childhood sweetheart and had wed him in 1750. Their 40-year-marriage ended when she died in 1790, predeaceasing him by 17 years. The couple were originally interred at St. Mary Woolnoth in Lombard Street, London, where they were in residence at the time of their respective deaths, but the building of the London Underground necessitated the removal of their remains to St. Peter & Paul Churchyard, in Olney, Buckinghamshire, in 1893. They had lived here during the Reverend Newton's curacy 1764-1779.
