Mezzo-Soprano, Composer. Cathy Anahid Berberian, known professionally as Cathy Berberian, was truly a unique singer and composer who studied at the Milan Conservatory in Italy in 1950. Berberian interpreted and performed many works by famous composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Luciano Berio, John Cage, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Kurt Weill, Sylvano Bussotti among many others. Berberian's American debut took place in 1960 at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts, the same state in which she was born. In 1966, Berberian composed 'Stripsody', which exploited her wide and unique vocal range while using the sounds traditionally written in comic books. She was famously married to composer Luciano Berio between 1950 and 1964 which produced one daughter, Cristina Berio (b. 1953). Berberian passed away of a heart attack on March 6, 1983 and her ashes were later scattered in the Mediterranean Sea by her brother and daughter.
