He was born in Wechmar, Germany, the son of Johann Hans Bach and Anna Schmied. When he was a young man, he worked as a court musician for the Prince, in the town of Weimar, which is about fifteen miles northeast of Wechmar.

In 1640, Christoph moved to a little town called Prettin, which is about one hundred miles northeast of Wechmar, and he worked there as a violinist.

While he was living in Prettin, he met and married Maria Magdalena Grabler, sometime around 1641. Around 1642, Christoph and Maria moved to Erfurt, where he served as a town and court musician.

They had at least four children, including a set of twin boys, who were identical: Dorothea Maria (born 1641); George Christoph (born 9-6-1642); and twins, Johann Ambrosius and Johann Christoph (born 2-22-1645).

Nobody could tell their twin boys apart, not even their parents. They looked exactly alike; they had the same manners of expression; and they played their violins in exactly the same way.

The twins were so much alike that, when one became ill, the other one became ill. People used to travel to Erfurt, just to look at them. In fact, when the twins later got married, it was said that even their wives couldn’t tell them apart.

One of those twins, Johann Ambrosius Bach, became the father of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Christoph died in Arnstadt, Germany. His wife Maria died, just 24 days later.
