Civil War Brevet Brigadier General. After the Civil War began, he helped raise the 39th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned its Major on August 12, 1861. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on December 1, 1861, he led the unit through its service, spending some time on the staff of Major General Alpheus S. Williams. He was wounded at the May 1864 Battle of Drury's Bluff, Virginia, and after recovery was named as Provost Marshal for the District of Eastern Virginia. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the campaign before Richmond, Virginia", he was appointed as Colonel on June 6, 1865, but was never officially mustered in at that rank. He was mustered out of the Union Army on December 6, 1865. After the war he served a term in the Illinois State Legislature, and passed away in Oak Park, Illinois in 1908.
