MANY AT BARTECKI FUNERAL
MAYOR REPRESENTS CITY IN HONOR OF DEAD DETECTIVE
The funeral of Kaiser Bartecki was held Tuesday morning. City officials, details from both the police and fire departments and members of all the Polish societies in Toledo attended. Bartecki was the detective who was killed last week while arresting Peter Skribner, accused of shooting Pauline Misun. Mayor Keller, accompanied by his private secretary, represented the city. A platoon of 25 patrolmen and a detail of nine detectives, under Inspector Smith, acted as escorts. The pallbearers were chosen from among the Polish members of the police force, while a detail of six firemen acted as honorary pallbearers. The requiem high mass was held at St. Stanislaus church on Detroit avenue at 10 o'clock and the burial made in Calvary Cemetery. One room of the home of the late detective at 923 Detroit avenue was filled with flowers.

Toledo Blade, January 26, 1915

Toledo Police Detective Kaiser Bartecki was shot and killed as he and several other officers attempted to arrest a man who had tried to murder a woman earlier in the day. The man had met the women six weeks earlier in New York City, New York, and had become obsessed with her. He had proposed to her several times and was rejected each time. After following the woman to Toledo and being turned down again, he shot the woman three times, seriously wounding her. The woman later died. Detective Bartecki and two other officers located the man about an hour later at another home. Detective Bartecki chased him around the back of the home where he was shot once in the chest and killed. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended at a railroad depot a short time later while trying to buy a ticket back to New York. He was charged with first degree murder. The suspect was convicted of Detective Bartecki's murder and sentenced to death. On February 9, 1916, his sentence was commuted to life. End of Watch: Thursday, January 21, 1915.
