U.S. Congressman. In 1856, he moved with his parents to Illinois, attended Rock River Seminary and was a clerk in Rochelle, (1863-65). He moved to Clinton, Iowa, in 1867, engaged in the manufacture of lumber, was an incorporator of the City National Bank of Clinton and served as a director since its organization in 1880. He was a director in a number of lumber companies and was a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, (1888-89). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1899. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he returned to his previous business interest and was vice president of the City National Bank of Clinton until his death at age 76.
