Died age 72y 11m 23d
Husband of Levinia Margaret Vanderhoof Mitchell May; father of Winston, Ida, Clarence, Margaret and Olive.

Obituary from Newton Press on March 3, 1897:

John May was born March 3, 1824 in Stark Co, VA; moved when quite young to Ohio; and thence to Jasper Co., ILL; married Margaret Mitchell in 1864; to them were born five children; she died in 1887 and he departed this life Thursday, Feb. 25, 1897 at 2 a.m. at the farm residence southeast of Newton.

Deceased was an excellent citizen, a man of strict probity, kind and generous impulses, and universally respected wherever known. He was a pioneer in Jasper county, coming here in 1839, settling on a farm on Goose Prairie, three miles south of town, living a part of the time in the old brick house there, thence moving to his own place east of there about a mile where he died - 58 years in the same neighborhood.

Mr. May, we believe, was never on a railway train in his life. He lived in a quiet, unostentatious way, attending strictly to his own affairs, walking to and from home, when he had occasion to go anywhere, making as little show as possible.

He leaves surviving him five children, two sons and three daughters, viz: Winston May, Clarence May, Mrs. Ida Reed, Mrs. Olive Swick, and Maggie May.

His remains were laid to rest at the Vanderhoof cemetery, Friday, Rev. Ch. M. Chamblin, officiating clergyman.

Note: there is no current Stark County, Virginia, but there is a Stark County, OH. It was stated on the 1870 census of Jasper County, IL, that he was born in Pennsylvania. At this time, there has been no research that has found John's parents' names.
