Pfc. Joey T. Sams II of Spartanburg, S.C., was a 2004 Spartanburg High School graduate. After a short stint in college, he realized that his dreams were to be a soldier in the U.S. Army, as other members of his family had served in the military. He joined the Army March 10, 2006 to help him achieve his dream of becoming a police detective. After completing two years at Spartanburg Technical College, he decided to enlist in the Army because he had aspirations of becoming an FBI agent and thought the experience would be invaluable. Basic training at Fort Benning was tough, but his he made it through and actually had fun. Due to his attention to detail and maturity, he was assigned as a Bradley fighting vehicle gunner. During his tenure in Baker Co., PFC Sams participated in Hammer Focus, National Training Center Rotation, Platoon and Squad Live-Fires, and several field training exercises. He grasped his job so fast and proficiently, that he even began to cross- train others on the weapons systems. PFC Sams always gave 100 percent in everything he did, from scoring 280 points or better on every APFT to being a positive role model to the younger soldiers. He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Joe "Sonny" Sams Jr. He was 22.
