The birth date given above for Mary is feasible, but its source is unclear. When her crypt within the Elisha Potter tomb was visited sometime before 2004, hers was the only inscription without a birth date, nor was her age given on the crypt (see South Kingstown Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries by Sterling, Wheaton, and Bamberg (2004), p 54). This memorialist would like to know where the date came from.

Mary was the daughter of Caleb Gardner and Isabel Sherman of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Her father was a successful yeoman who owned a few slaves. Mary was married twice, the first time on 16 June 1776 to Joseph Perkins, the son of Edward Perkins and Elizabeth Brenton. Joseph was a silversmith, goldsmith, and merchant, and by one account was, in 1781, a member of the Kingston Reds during the Am. Revolutionary War. Following his death, Mary married on 7 November 1790 Elisha Reynolds POTTER, the son of Col. Thomas Potter and Elizabeth Reynolds. Mary had no children with either husband. Following Mary's death in 1809, her husband m. 9 July 1810 Mary's niece, Mary Mawney, the daughter of Pardon Mawney and Experience Gardner. Elisha Potter and both of his wives are buried in a locked family vault in the Col. Thomas Potter Cemetery in South Kingstown.
