In Deming, Saturday, Sept. 8, at 12:30 a.m., Harvey H. Whitehill passed over the Great Divide after an honorable and useful life of sixty-nine years, most of which had been spent in this territory. He had been ailing for something over a year, being a great sufferer from Bright's disease. The remains were taken to Silver City the same day and on the following Sunday were laid beside those of his first wife in the Masonic Cemetery, he being a member of longstanding of that organization.
Deceased had been married twice and, altogether, left a family of eleven children, his second wife still surviving him. By his first wife, whose maiden name was Harriet Stevens, and whom he married 41 years ago in Denver, Colorado, he became the father of nine children all now grown to man and womanhood and all of whom are residents of Luna and Grant counties. They are Harvey V., Mrs. Emma Kilburn, Wayne W., Cornelius C., Josephine S., Harriett J., Olive P., Caroline C, and Mary H. By his second wife he was the father of Howard and Jennie, both infants at present, the oldest being three years.
Ever since coming to the territory, "Uncle Harvey" was prominent in politics and was a life long democrat. He served several terms as sheriff of Grant county and was never defeated for that office but once, to the writers recollection. There are few men in southern New Mexico today that were better known and none more respected than Harvey H. Whitehill.
Peace to his great and good soul.
