Dr. Meryleen Bailey, Smith of Peterstown, W. Va., died Tuesday, December 28, 1999, in Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital, Pearisburg, Va. Born December 13, 1917, at Rock, W. Va., she was a daughter of the late Addison Crockett and Alice Shutt Bailey. Dr. Smith attended Mary Baldwin College and received a Medical Degree from The University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943 and served an internship at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. She later graduated from University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine and was a resident in Pediatrics at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa. She was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in 1958. She was on the staff at Williamson Memorial Hospital in Williamson, W. Va., and was the Company Physician for C. H. Mead Coal Company. She also had a private practice in Peterstown, W. Va. and Rich Creek, Va. from 1947 to 1955. She was Chief of Pediatrics at Bluefield Sanitarium Clinic from 1957 to 1962; Pediatric Consultant for W. Va. Maternal and Child Health Division State Health Department from 1962 to 1969. She was a member of Peterstown Chapter 118, Order of the Eastern Star, Alpha Delta Kappa, American Medical Association, American Public Health Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Secretary of W. Va. Pediatric Society, W. Va. State Medical Association, W. Va. Public Health Association, Mercer County Medical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of Peterstown United Methodist Church in Peterstown. She was preceded in death by one sister, Violet Bailey Lacy; and one brother, Aubrey Crockett Bailey. Survivors include one son, Alexander Moffett Smith of Peterstown; one daughter, Roberta Smith Matney of Blacksburg, Va.; one brother, Dr. Lucian Percy Bailey, Bluefield, Va.; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2000, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown with Rev. Scott Sears and Nancy Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Princeton, W. Va. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or the United Methodist Church of Peterstown.
