George was the oldest child born to Colin McLachlan and Elizabeth Morton. He was probably born in the Chester City, Delaware County, Pennsylvania vicinity. In 1829 his family moved to West Fallowfield, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Shortly after his father died in 1831, the family moved to the Marcus Hook area Delaware county where his mother's family was.

On November 24, 1831 George married Margaret Harvey Ware at the Methodist Episcopal Church (Old St. George's), Philadelphia. Over the next two decades, the couple had children Isabella, William, Isaac, Maria, Lewis and George Howard (known as Howard to differentiate from his father).

By 1840 he was living in Lower Chichester, Chester County raising his family. The Rev. Joseph Walker, Jr. lived several doors away. Joseph Walker. Jr. was pastor of the Marcus Hook Baptist Church in the Cedar Grove section of Lower Chichester from 1824 to 1843 and officiated the marriage of George's brother Samuel.

In 1842 George McLoclin, shoemaker, was in Newlin Township, Chester County.

In 1850, he and his family were living in Kennett Square, Delaware county, Pennsylvania next to neighbor Enoch Passmore, farmer.

About 1853 -1854 he and his family moved to Philadelphia. George was a shoemaker all his life.

Death Notice Philadelphia Public Ledger Newspaper July 6, 1857:
On the 2d inst., Mr. George McLachlan, in the 46th year of his age. [Chester County papers please copy] The relatives and friends of the family, also Cohocksink Lodge no. 383; I. O. of O. F., are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from his late residence; Jefferson street, below Apple St., this (Monday) afternoon, at 3 o'clock without further notice - to proceed to Mount Moriah Cemetery.

George died of Consumption of Lungs. During a twenty-year period beginning with George, from 1857 to 1877, tubercolosis (consumption) would claim the lives of him, all his chidren and a son-in-law. His wife died at the age of 76 in 1890 of consumption.
