A native of Montevideo, Minnesota, Thompson attended the University of Minnesota, where he was a member of the National College Football Championship Teams of 1935 and 1936. Playing the position of defensive end and halfback, Thompson was later a professional football player for the National Football League's Pittsburgh Pirates from 1937 to 1938, and the Green Bay Packers in 1939. He later retired from football to enter military service following the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. In December 1941, he joined the United States Navy and served as a fighter pilot and squadron executive officer at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida. Following World War II, he was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1949. Following his military service, Thompson became a football coach at the local Jackson High School, a post he held until his retirement in the 1960s. He died in Jacksonville, Florida, where he had lived for some 40 years.
