Civil War Union Army Officer. Served as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 115th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. While Major of the regiment, he assumed command of the regiment when it Colonel Francis Lancaster, was killed in the Battle of Chancellorsville. Commanded his unit at the Battle of Gettysburg, where he led it in the initial defense of the Wheatfield area after it was detached from Burling's Brigade along with the 8th New Jersey Infantry. The 115th PA fought at the edge of Rose Woods at the south slope of the Stony Hill, and then assisted in supporting Winslow's 1st New York Battery. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel before his service ended. His name is inscribed on the 115th Pennsylvania Monument, which is located in the Wheatfield on DeTrobriand Avenue in the Gettysburg National Military Park.
