Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when commissioned a Captain in the 23rd Michigan Volunteer Regiment. He served with the 23rd Michigan the entire war, was promoted Colonel in command in 1864 and for duties to the Union, was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March, 1865. After the war, he resumed legal practice and was a special agent of the United States Treasury Department. In 1881, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-seventh Congress, serving until 1883. He was the Assistant U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in 1885 and was president of the first International American Customs Congress, held in New York City in January, 1903.
