US Regular Brigade Civil War Monument. This monument was erected by the comrades of the Regular Brigade of the Army of the Cumberland during the Civil War. It was dedicated in memory of the officers and enlisted men of the United States Regular Army Regiments who were killed or died from wounds received at the Battle of Stones River near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The battle took place from December 31, 1862 to January 3, 1863. Among the nearly 80,000 men who converged there to fight in battle were Regular Army troops that consisted of the 15th, 16th, 18th, and 19th United States Regular Army Infantry Regiments and Battery H of the 5th U.S. Artillery. The Regulars witnessed some of the heaviest fighting during the battle which produced the highest percentage of casualties than any other battle of the war. The battle decimated units from both sides. The Regulars, as opposed to volunteer regiments, were often the best equipped, best trained, and most elite troops on the field of battle. Many of the men had previous combat experience from the Mexican American War or from serving on the Western Frontier. During the battle at Stones River, the 19th U.S. Infantry clashed with the 8th Tennessee Confederate Infantry in an area of the battlefield that became known as "Hell's Half Acre". Joseph Prentice, a Private with Company E of the 19th U.S. Infantry, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for retrieving the body of his commanding officer, Major Stephen Decatur Carpenter, through a hail of enemy fire. During the battle, the Regular units suffered 623 casualties. The monument is a tall granite structure, topped with a bronze eagle, that stands near the center of the cemetery.
