African-American animator and director. An artist since childhood, he was not only one of the first black animators to be hired by both Disney & Warner Bros., but he was one of the animators behind the television works of "Linus the Lionhearted" (1964), "You're in Love, Charlie Brown" (1967) & "He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown" (1968). He also directed several Captain Crunch Cereal commercials & animated television series, which include "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle & Friends" (then titled "The Bullwinkle Show" on NBC; 1961) & "George of the Jungle" (1967). In 1960, the same year he directed the "Mr. Magoo" animated television series, he became the first black president of a Hollywood film union when he was appointed as one of the Screen Cartoonist's Guild, a title that was previously held by his mentor & fellow animator Ben Washam. His final work, "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" (1969), was aired six months after he had passed away from cancer. In 2019, he was posthumously awarded the International Animated Film Association's Winsor McCay Award for his "recognition of lifetime/career contributions to the art of animation."
