Marcos Balcarce
Birth: Apr. 25, 1777
Death: Dec. 4, 1832

Joined the Military at a young age and was involved in the struggles against the Portuguese in Missiones Province, and against the English invasions. He was taken prisoner by the English. When released he went to Spain, where he fought against Napoleon. He returned to Argentina and took part in the May Revolution. Sent to Chile, he participated in actions for O'Higgins. He remained in Chile as Governor until the arrival of San Martin, whence he returned to Buenos Aires to work in various government positions. (bio by: Glen Short)
