John was born in Ireland. John had two sisters and seven brothers. The family immigrated to the Huron District of Ontario Canada in 1837. John is found with 80 acres on Lot 40, Concession 8 of The Huron District in 1842. John and Elizabeth Sayre married on September 16, 1846 in Goderich of Huron County, Ontario, Canada. The family settled in Hillsboro. Two young sons are buried in Huron County of Ontario Canada. John died in Portland at the home of his daughter Emily. There are empty graves in Bayfield Cemetery of Huron County for both John and Elizabeth.
An obituary has recently been discovered: John Hanley was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, near the town of Enniskillen, in 1819, and when 18 years of age came with his parents to Canada, enlisting at once with the volunteers to quell the McKenzie rebellion in the North west. In the fall of 1873 he moved to California, and next year to Oregon, locating in Washington County. In 1846 Mr. Hanley married Miss Elizabeth T. Sayre, and 10 children were born the couple, six of whom are now living. These are Charles A., John B., Adeline (Mrs. F. Chalmers), Elizabeth (Mrs. T. R. Davis) and Olive (Mrs. Geo. R. Bagley), all of Washington county, and Mrs. Emily Hankins, of Portland. His wife died in 1885, and three years later Mr. Hanley married Mrs. E. I. Softley, who passed away a little more than a year ago. Mr. Hanley was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church for a full half century. The burial took place in the North Plains Presbyterian Cemetery, Wednesday.
