Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was an American lighthouse keeper who became famous for his heroism. He is the only person in history to have received both the Medal of Honor and the Gold Lifesaving Medal.Served in the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company B, 50th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Port Hudson, Louisiana on July 4, 1863. His citation reads "Voluntarily exposed himself to a heavy fire to get water for comrades in rifle pits." His Medal was issued on November 2, 1895.
