Religious Figure. Born in Randolph, Vermont, he graduated from the University of Vermont and was ordained a Congregational minister in January 1818. He served as a missionary in Georgia and in 1819, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions sent Washburn to the Arkansas Cherokees. He preached the first sermon in Little Rock on July 4, 1820, founded the Dwight Mission, a school for the Cherokee Indians, near Russellville, Arkansas and was known as the "Apostle to the Cherokee". When the Cherokee Nation was relocated westward to Oklahoma in 1828, he moved his mission to a new site in Marble City and remained in position until 1850. He concluded his career as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, retiring in 1855.
