Scientist. He attended the Missouri School of Mines, where he graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor's of Science in Chemical Engineering. While attending M.S.M., Cowan was the Editor-in-Chief of the Missouri Miner, M.S.M.'s college newspaper, from 1939-1940. Cowan went on to discover the neutrino in 1956 with Frederick Reines, who accepted the Nobel Prize in Physics in both of their names in 1995. Clyde Cowan served as a Captain in the United States Army Air Forces in World War II. He was named an Honorary Doctor of Science by the University of Missouri-Rolla (formerly the Missouri School of Mines) in 1972.
