Police detectives Lester Dorman, Miles Jackson and Sonoma County Sheriff James A. Petray are killed by George Boyd, member of a Howard Street gang responsible for kidnapping and raping several women. Boyd and other captured gang members are taken to Santa Rosa Jail where a mob of 2,000 makes three failed attempts over nine hours to break in and lynch them, and shots are fired between the crowd and prison guards. Because of links between the gang and boxing in the city, the police commission revokes all permits for future bouts.
