Singer. Nicknamed "The American Nightingale" because her flute-like soprano, with remarkably clear high notes, she reminded many listeners of Jenny Lind, the famous "Swedish Nightingale." While a teenager she began singing in local Brooklyn churches, becoming the chief soloist at Henry Ward Beecher's famous Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights. She later went on to successfully produce her own concerts, making her the first female concert promoter.
