Obituary extract from the “Hooker County [NE] Tribune,” 21 Apr 1916, n. p.:
“JOHN SPECK DEAD/ Died at his home in Rock Island, Texas, John Speck, aged 55 years... Although the deceased had been in failing health for several months past, no one thought the end was so near. After visiting several weeks with relatives here he returned to his Texas home a month ago...
Deceased was born in Illinois in 1861, and in an early day moved to Clay County, Neb., then to Gosper county and a few years later to Lincoln county, from which place he moved to Mullen in 1894. Residence here continued up to about six years ago, when he moved to Texas. He leaves a devoted wife and four children... now grown, all of whom were present at the last sad rites that passed the earthly existence of a good man into consoling memory. The surviving children are, Jess and Clyde Speck, Mrs. Sam Stockham and Mrs. Wm. Gorsuch. David Speck, a brother, is another near and dear relative left to mourn.
All the early day residents of Hooker county knew John Speck. He was a devoted husband and a kind and indulgent father...
The funeral service was held Monday and interment made at Rock Island..."
