Delbert William Adair was born in Pinetop on October 18, 1907. He was the seventh child born to John Washington Adair and Cynthia Jane Penrod and he went by the name Dell. Dell's first marriage was to Armilda (Millie) Alice Gordon, daughter of Joseph and Amanda Gordon. She was born on January 6, 1905, and passed away on February 23, 2002. She was first married to Chester Lewis Strohm. Dell and Armilda had three children: Shirley Ann, John Eugene, and Dennis Gordon. Dell and Armilda eventually divorced.

Dell's second marriage was to Marceline Sidna Mae Russell in Gallup, New Mexico on March 31, 1947. Marceline is the daughter of John Wesley Russell and Hazel Minnie Moore. Dell and Marceline lived on one-half acre in Pinetop just below the apple orchard, and close to other members of the Adair family. They built their own house and used a team of horses to carry logs from the woods nearby. They had three children: Janice Cynthia, Kathleen Freda, and Allen Russell.

Dell was a rancher and a cowboy. He was very good with horses, and people would hire him to break their horses in. Dell also loved to hunt and fish. He was known to go up into the mountains by himself for days. Dell took his nephew, Delbert, for a horseback ride up the hill where they lived. Delbert said it was a scary experience for a little kid.

Dell worked as a truck driver in the Civilian Conservation Corps or C.C.C. Camp. In April of 1937, Dell volunteered with a group of people to go up to Mount Baldy in the White Mountains to rescue any survivors of an airplane crash.

Delbert, son of Leslie Ronald, thought the actor Brian Keith and the sportscaster Curt Gowdy looked much like his uncle.

Dell sadly passed away from a heart attack on July 16, 1956, in Pinetop.
