Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was First Lieutenant Adjutant of the 2nd Iowa Infantry, Acting Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of Major General Samuel R. Curtis, and Inspector General on the staff of Major General Samuel R. Curtis. At the end of the war, he received the title of Brevet Brigadier General for brave conduct and efficient services during the war. He was Superintendent for Indian Affairs for Washington Territory from 1868 until 1873; and engaged in railroad, real estate and building enterprises from then until his death in 1899.
