Mrs. Magruder, Civic Leader, Dies After Long Illness

Mrs. A. C. Magruder of 1303 N. Nevada Ave., philanthropist and civic leader, died Friday noon at a local hospital following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Grace Episcopal Church, with the Rev. J. Lindsey Patton, rector, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends are requested to omit flowers and contribute to the charity of their choice instead. The Law Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Magruder came to Colorado Springs from Illinois when a little girl, and at the time of her death was living in the family home, which was built by her father, Horace M. Carlton. In 1901 she was married to Dr. A. C. Magruder, eye specialist. For several years they lived in Cripple Creek, where Dr. Magruder practiced and where their two children were born.

Dr. Magruder died in 1924. Their daughter, Leslie Katherine, died in 1941.

Mrs. Magruder supervised the organization of the war recreation committee, planning a snack bar and library at the City Auditorium, and serving as program chairman for the board. She represented the WRC at City Council meetings. From 1943 to 1945 when the Community Chest was known as the War Chest, Mrs. Magruder was president. Her year round duties in this capacity included supervising the organization of the campaign army, numerous conferences in Denver with state War Chest officials and the personal handling of the collection of funds in the areas of El Paso County outside of Colorado Springs.

Mrs. Magruder was on the original board of advisors of the Colorado Child Guidance Clinic and gave of her time, money and energy to the group. Paralleling her work with the clinic, she was instrumental in forming the Child Placing Service in 1929-30 designed to secure foster care for children.

She was largely responsible for the original organization of the City-County Health Unit and later served on the State Health Board for several terms under the late Dr. Florence Sabin. She was one of 50 appointed by former Gov. Knous in 1946 to study the possible reorganization of the state department of health.

Mrs. Magruder was a member of the original committee that contributed to the Youth Building at Grace Episcopal Church. She also helped co-ordinate social service and community activities as related to the church.

Mrs. Magruder was a member of the Visiting Nurse Association board for many years and served on many other boards in the Community such as the Nutrition Camp board. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

Surviving is a son, Carlton A. Magruder of Upland, Calif., a granddaughter, Enda Winfield Magruder of this city; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Howard S. Chilton and Mrs. A. E. Carlton pf Colorado Springs, and a nephew, James A. Magruder of Colorado Springs.
