Musician. He was a leading pioneer of the revival of campanology, or ecclesiastical bell-ringing. Born into a family known for achievers, his brother and an uncle were both knighted. He matriculated at Trinity College at Cambridge in 1850, graduating B.A. in 1854 and proceeding M.A. in 1858. In 1855 he was ordained in the Church of England, eventually becoming a high churchman. Becoming recognized an authority on bellringing, his series of articles in "Church Bells" was published collectively in 1871 under the title "Change-ringing Disentangled and Management of Towers." A second edition was published in 1880, which is still available to purchase in the 21st century. He was a mountain climber, being a member of the Alpine Club from 1858 to 1868. He most accomplished climb was in Switzerland with the ascent of La Dent Blanche on July 18, 1862. He married and the couple had four sons and three daughters.
