She was a most affectionate devoted wife and mother who never thought of herself when she could contribute to her family's happiness or help them to perform their duty. These features in her character were illustrated by the message sent to her husband at Washington from her deathbed (her two oldest sons being absent on missions in Europe at the same time). "Stand to your post the Lord can raise me up and answer to your prayers there as well as if you were here."
