Forestville Free Press of 10 Sep 1897: "Mr. James has lived an honest, self-respecting, uneventful life, and has none of the exciting "yarns" to tell us, like those with which most old settlers entertain the later comers. To me he said, 'I never chased bears nor Indians, and they never chased me. Of course I have seen both of these objects of terror, but they were usually in a circus where both they and myself were safe.'"
