Wonderdog of Fort Bridger. Some soldiers of Fort Bridger found a pup and named him for a Major Thornburgh who had been killed by Indians in 1879. Thornburgh distinguished himself on several occasions before he was fatally kicked by a mule belonging to "Buck" Buchanan, his inseparable companion. Among his feats, Thornburgh caught a commissary thief, warned a sentinel of marauding Indians, saved a soldier's life in a knife fight, and saved a young boy from drowning. This wonderful hero died on September 27, 1888. He is buried in his own little plot, with a great headstone and surrounded by a white picket fence, on the grounds of the old Fort Bridger. The inscription on the headstone reads: "Man never had a better, truer, braver friend. Sleep on old fellow, we'll meet 'Across the Range'". It is said that his master lies in an unmarked grave in Salt Lake City.
