Pfc. Bruce C. Salazar Jr., of Tracy, California grew up in the Modesto area and in Corona and lived for a time in Davis, where he attended high school for a short time. He was never shy about his childhood dreams of becoming a soldier and his mom knew if he wasn't home in time for dinner, she could find him among the men in uniform at the military recruitment office down the street from their home. He enlisted in January 2006 and deployed to Iraq on May 11. Bruce had a perpetual smile and longed to start a family while pursuing a career in the military. At home, Salazar had fun teasing his five sisters. He also had a competitive streak — he played high school football and baseball, and always wanted to sell the most candy in raising funds for his baseball team. In the fourth grade, he was proud to be the lone student who was chosen to care for the class pet, a bird, over the summer. He began going to church and was baptized the Sunday before he shipped off to boot camp. He died in Muhammad Sath, Iraq, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device at age 24.
