Canadian Politician. The longest-serving Speaker of the Canadian Senate to date. A native of Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Charbonneau graduated from the University of Montreal in 1941. Commissioned into the army in 1942 to serve during World War Two, he was assigned to Les Fusiliers Mont Royal until 1944, when he was promoted to Captain and assigned as Air Liaison Officer to the French Wing of the Allied Tactical Air Forces in Europe. After the war, he returned to Canada and took a job with the Peerless Insurance Agencies, eventually becoming president in 1963. In 1979 he was appointed to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Charles Joseph Clark serving until 1997 and served as Speaker of the Senate from 1984 until 1993. In 1996 he was appointed to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, where he served until his death at the age of 75 from cancer.
