Elizabeth Shoup was born to Jacob and Sarah Downing Shoup May 9, 1815 in Walnut Township, Ohio. She was raised there from 1815 into the early 1830's when her family moved to Sangamon County, Illinois. It was here she met and married Barnet Ramsay. They were wed on May 15, 1836 in Ball, Sangamon, Illinois. By August of 1850, they had six children and were preparing for a move to Oregon. Somewhere along the trail, their youngest child passed away. Elizabeth and family arrived in Oregon in 1852. According to historical records, they were in Linn County, Oregon in 1860. Here they had acquired land and made their home. Elizabeth was likely very busy caring for her family and seeing to the daily chores of farm life. After 36 years of marriage, her husband passed away of a sudden illness. From historical records, Elizabeth was staying with a married daughter in 1880. She lived on another fourteen years after her husband's death.
