US Congressman. An attorney, Whittington practiced law first in Roxie, Mississippi, and later in Greenwood, where he was a member of the City Council. He served in the Mississippi Senate for eight years before running for Congress as a Democrat in 1924. A Representative from Mississippi in thirteen consecutive Congresses, from March 1925 until January 1951, Whittington chose not to run for reelection in 1950. He returned to Greenwood and resumed his law practice.
