Major League Baseball Manager. After a playing career in minor league baseball, he spent thirty-six years in the Baltimore Orioles organization as a scout, coach, minor league manager, and eventually as manager of the team from 1987 to 1988. While a manager in the team's minor league organization, he helped guide the development of numerous Major League players, including future Hall of Fame players Eddie Murray, Jim Palmer and his son, Cal Ripken Jr. He also coached another son into the Major Leagues, Billy Ripken. He was a coach for the Orioles when they appeared in and lost the 1979 World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and when they won the 1983 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. He retired from coaching in 1992 and passed away of lung cancer in 1999, but a few years before he passed away he was able to witness his son Cal Jr. break Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig's consecutive game played record in September 1995.
