Obituary - On June 19, 2002, a perfect, peaceful morning, William Wareing Cannon, a man without guile, peacefully slipped off the bands of mortality. He has joined his son, Layne, on his next great adventure. Active to the end, he earned a gen-tle passing. We mourn our loss, but are consoled by a vast reservoir of memories.
Bill was born in Salt Lake City, UT April 10, 1924, to Edwin Quayle Cannon and Luella Wareing Cannon. He married Margery Sorensen in the Salt Lake LDS Temple Sept 13, 1946.
He had a love for education. He was a graduate of the Navy Supply Graduate School of Business at Harvard University, had a BS in Civil Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and an MS in Engineering Mechanics from the University of Utah. He was an Instructor in the College of Engineering at the University of Utah for three years, a member of the Salt Lake City School Board of Education for three years and a member of the Utah State Board of Education for two years.
Bill worked with his brother, Edwin Q. Cannon, Jr., as an owner, president and manager of the Salt Lake Stamp Company for thirty-four years. He then worked eight years for Zions Securities Corporation, as residential division manager, as operations manager for the Hawaii Division and as vice president of Hawaii Reserves, the successor to the Hawaii Division.
Finally, he worked three years as vice president of Business Development for Okland Construction Co. Bill was involved in many civic and work related organizations, including the Salt Lake Rotary Club, Salt Lake Exchange Club, Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, Timpanogas Club, Cannon-Hinckley Church History group, Bonneville Knife and Fork Club, Utah Manufacturers Association and Marking Device Manufacturers Association.
He and Marge had a love for Hawaii and the Hawaiian people. From 1947-1949, they served as full-time missionaries in the Hawaiian Mission. They returned from 1975-1978 when Bill served as mission president of the Hawaii Honolulu Mission. They returned again in 1992, for 1 1/2 years, when Bill served as vice president of Hawaii Reserves. Bill was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he enjoyed many callings. In addition to his mission service, he served as president of the LDS Servicemen in the Chicago Stake, as a scoutmaster for five years, as bishop of the University of Utah 13th (student) Ward, as a member of the Melchizedek Priesthood MIA General Board, as a member of the high council, and he and Margery were serving as ordinance workers in the Salt Lake Temple for the last year and a half of his life.
Bill is survived by his wife, Margery; and seven children, Michael (Patty), David, Wendy, Robert (Judy), Merilee Sine (Glorn), Christian (Nanette), Matthew (Carol). His son, Layne (Mary), died three years ago. He also has 18 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Services will be Thurs. June 27, 12 noon, Monument Park Stake Center, 1300 S. and Wasatch Dr, Salt Lake City. Family and friends will gather Wed. June 26, 6-8 p.m., Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S, Salt Lake City, and Thurs. 10:45-11:45 a.m. at the stake center. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave and N St.
Donations may be made in his memory to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund.
