Ann "Nancy" Manning was the daughter of Robert Manning and Monica Fenwick Manning. She was a descendant of Cuthbert Fenwick, one of the gentlemen, who came to Maryland from England in 1634 and established the third English settlement in America at St. Mary's. Her descendants qualify for membership in the "Ark and the Dove Society".

On 28 Feb 1802, she married Joshua Millard, a son of Joseph Millard and Rebecca Fenwick, in St. Mary's County. By 1803, they were living in Washington, D.C. where all thirteen of their children were born. Robert F. Millard, the first born in 1803, in Washington, is my gggfather by his second marriage to Massy Wadlington Sparks in Nacogdoches, TX.

Joshua died in 1832 and following his death, Ann returned to St. Mary's County and the family home that was known as "Bellville" where she lived with several of her children until her death in June, 1866.

The St. Mary's Beacon newspaper carried a "PUBLIC SALE" notice on 8 Nov 1866, that offered for sale, on Wednesday, the 28th instant, the household and kitchen furniture of the late Mrs. Ann Millard, and at the same time, I will sell, Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Tobacco, Corn, Fodder, Hogs. Terms made known on the day of sale. John M. Millard. Copy of newspaper notice in her file.

Belleville, the farm, is purchased from the probate estate in 1868, by John M. Millard and owned by him till his death, June, 1883. At his death, the property again goes through the St. Mary's Equity court with sales proceeds distributed to the heirs of John M. Millard, which would have been his siblings, since he did not marry.

The St. Mary's Beacon newspaper carried the following: "DIED - On Tuesday, last the 5th instant, at the residence of her son, John M. Millard, in this district, Mrs. ANN MILLARD, in the 85th year of her age. May she rest in peace." Copy of this article in her file.

Inscription on tombstone at Old St. Aloysius Cemetery, Leonardtown, MD; "Our Dear Mother - Ann Manning - wife of Joshua Millard - Died 5th June 1866 - aged 84 Years". Pictures of grave site were taken in Nov 1998 by Mrs. Joan Rogers of St Mary's Co. and sent to me.

It is quite likely that Joshua Millard is also buried in this cemetery, and according to the burial records compiled by Tice, he is buried in the Old St. Aloysious Cemetery, with the marker long gone.
