Charles Malcolm, son of John and Martha (Axling) Bliss, was born May 12, 1884 at Clay Center, Kansas. In 1894, at the age of 10, he came to Oklahoma by covered wagon with his family; they settled on a farm north of Avard. In 1908, Charles filed on a claim near the Schrock Post Office and proved it up. On December 28, 1910, he and Iva W. Hendricks were married in the Goshen County Church parsonage by the Methodist minister. Iva, daughter of John and Ellen Hendricks, was born October 16, 1893 near Decatur, Illinois and came with her family to Oklahoma in 1902 at the age of 9; they settled on a farm 12 miles west of Alva and later moved to the Avard Community. Charles and Iva first lived in a one-room house that he had built on his claim. In 1912 they bought land west and south of his clamed and moved to a dugout there. Later they bought more land to the south and built a permanent home there. This land is in the Lookout Community; and it was home to Charles and Iva until their deaths, hers on March 15, 1958 and his on May 4, 1961. Both are buried at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater, Kansas.
